Four  Maples

ABOUT

Our estate is surrounded by the Adirondack Mountains, we are located in Champlain Valley of New York Viticulture Area (AVA). The abandoned land was bought in 2008 and established Four Maples Vineyard in 2011 turning the land into an estate.

Our journey started with vines planted in 2010 on our American Dreams (A) plot.  It is our American dream, as we have looked for many years in Quebec and Ontario for a suitable land with the right orientation for our dream project.  We found it here in Champlain, with the right orientation and the gentle slopes.  The vines in our Big Apple (B) plot were planted in 2011—2012.  Why Big Apple?  Simply because we are in the state of New York.  The Champlain Corner (C) plot were planted in 2014.  Champlain is where we are.

In 2021, new 1800 vines are planted, the new plots, were named after the family that was here before Dodds (D);  and Erwin (E) for the present owner and the man that made the vineyard happened.  With the new plantings, the total number of vines brings the total of 5600 planted on our property.  All the vines are cold hardy varietals of Marquette and Frontenac Red  for the reds, La Crescent and St-Pepin and the new Itasca for the whites.

Our dream continues with the construction of a new pavilion in 2021 to accommodate events and gatherings outside which will respect the Covid restrictions.  We remember the history of this land that we love and the family that was here before.  We are sure many dreams were created then, witnessed by the maple trees.  Welcome to our vineyard, enjoy the breeze, the nature around and dream with us while sitting under our four magnificent Maple trees.  The trees that gave our vineyard its’ name.  They have been there as long as the village people remembered and they are there for more than a century.  Enjoy our delicious wine made from grapes from our land, our terroir.  This is our happy place and we want to share it with you……...CHEERS!

OUR NORDIC GRAPES VARIETIES

As the say goes, the sun made the wine. With good weather and good vines that gives good grapes, good wine is made in the vineyard.  The finesse of the wine ends in the winery.

Meet our grapes and learn about them.  We grow mostly cold hardy hybrid grapes that  we called Nordic grapes and they thrive in our North Country climate.  The cultivar are mostly developed by Minnesota University for their suitability in the cold harsh winter and their resistance to diseases.  Each of our vines are planted by hand and cared for during the season with love and passion.  We leave 10 to 20 clusters on each plant to ensure that we get the best quality grapes for our wine.  Our philosophy is not the quantity of the grapes but the quality.  Click on the grape name to see the factsheet of each grape type.
